First an update on Hana - she's precious. And she had a bunch of gunk in her belly. The public health nurse came today and was talking to me. I told her we'd been having trouble with Hana because she always got really gassy and couldn't lay on her back for more than about 20 mins without waking, wich made nights really hard. The nurses at the hospital had said it was normal and told me to hold her on her belly, and that seemed to help. We were also having trouble with feeding her - she would stop sucking but still be hungry, and she had lost almost 10% of her weight. Well, all of those problems are fixed now (or at least so far they seem to be) because she vomited up a bunch of gunk. The PHN said it was normal in babies who had swallowed gunk in utero, and asked if she had been suctioned. She had, but apparently they missed a lot. It was kinda freaky seeing it come out, I was glad the nurse was there. Since then she's been so settled, has been eating great, and seems to be doing much better. I'm a little frustrated they didn't notice the problem at the hospital, but I'm just so happy to have a healthy baby and not to have to worry about her weight any more.
Now the other news. As of yesterday, the summit church where I had been working has closed. For those of you who don't know it was a plant in Calgary that started about 4 years ago. There are a lot of reasons why it closed, most having to do with a combination of cultral things. It's very sad, but good - with all the leaders/staff being bi-vocational things were getting hard on everyone.
We're not really sure what will happen next - to get my ordination I'll need to find another church, but I had been planning on not getting ordained for at least another year anyway (church maternity leave). We have our lease until July and we like it here, so there's no rush. We're going to find a church we can be part of and just take it as it comes.

The gunk in the belly-thing...it's actually VERY normal...in a vaginal birth, it squeezes most of it out...whereas a c-section with no previous labor (contraction-wise) doesn't really permit a way for that stuff to come out on it's own...and they can only suction what is present in her mouth at the time...That's why a lot of C-section babies go to the NICU for a few hours to a day after delivery with what they call "Wet Lung". It's just amniotic fluid that their tiny little bodies couldn't squeeze out due to a section. But I am glad she didn't have to go to the NICU for it, and that she is doing better now! She is such a little beauty!!
Sorry to hear about the church closing on you...does that mean you don't get your maternity pay???? Because that would really stink....super bad!
Thanks Kayla! I'm shocked the nurses at the hospital didn't mention something about that - had I been all alone when she spit it up I would have had a breakdown!
The church closing doesn't affect my maternity pay, I'm getting that from my other job (no one at the church was getting paid actually, we all had other jobs or fund raised).
Oh the joy of being a mother/doctor/nurse in one to figure out what is going with with a newborn. Glad Hanna is doing better. I almost had to hog tie your mother-in-law(from a distance) when she was born. I was talking to Bren and Amy online as we all waiting to hear who got word first. I had to figure out the time difference and keep bugging Amy on instant messenger if she hear anything yet. LOLOL It was exciting. Has Ben changed any diapers yet? : > ) On your other news..would you guys consider moving back to NB? Sure wish I could see ya all at Christmas. I like the Kentucky winter better than NB's winter weather.
Give a kiss to Hanna from her family in Kentucky....and Ben too! : > )
Blessings on you all,
Love Joe(Carolee)
I could not help but wonder the same thing as the last poster... Thoughts of returning to NB cross your mind at all?! :P hehe..
In any case I am glad everything is turning out well! Good timing all around!
PS, did you find that Hana fit into 0-3 month old clothing, or did you have to use 'premie' clothing? I am wondering about finding the proper winter suit that will fit well for the hospital... ;)
I love you. I am glad all is well. Thank you for keeping us informed!
Thankful for a healthy baby!!! Thanks for the updates :)
Congrats Steph and Ben!!
congradualtions on the baby!
I have to ask what about Dave and kat? what are they going to be doing now?
Are you Booby feeding or formula feeding? Glad everythign is going better now! I remember the waking up throughout the night.... Good times! I got frustrated some nights, because Gabby would wake up five minutes after going to sleep... but it got better, MUCH BETTER!
